    QCD calculation of J/psi+gamma mass distributions

    We compute the J/psi+gamma invariant-mass distributions from the QCD subprocess g + g --> J/psi+gamma. At large masses, this subprocess is the dominant mechanism for J/psi+gamma production, and data could provide a good test of QCD. The mass distribution peaks at relatively small masses (3.4 - 4.0 GeV) and the subprocess could, therefore, represent a significant QCD background to J/psi+gamma decay of heavier charmonia.     Configuration management and automatic control of an augmentor wing aircraft with vectored thrust

    An advanced structure for automatic flight control logic for powered-lift aircraft operating in terminal areas is under investigation at Ames Research Center. This structure is based on acceleration control; acceleration commands are constructed as the sum of acceleration on the reference trajectory and a corrective feedback acceleration to regulate path tracking errors. The central element of the structure, termed a Trimmap, uses a model of the aircraft aerodynamic and engine forces to calculate the control settings required to generate the acceleration commands. This report describes the design criteria for the Trimmap and derives a Trimmap for Ames experimental augmentor wing jet STOL research aircraft

    Inter-annual relationship between Atlantic sea surface temperature anomalies and Indian summer monsoon

    In this study, the simultaneous inter-annual relationships between SST anomalies over the Northwest Atlantic Ocean and southwest monsoon rainfall over the monsoon core region have been examined using monthly SST and atmospheric data for the period 1951-2005. Statistical analyses reveal significant inter-annual simultaneous relationship between the SST anomalies over North Atlantic and rainfall over the monsoon core region, but with significant epochal variations. The relationship has become stronger after mid-1970s when the El Nino-Indian monsoon relationship has weakened. Positive SST anomalies over the North Atlantic Ocean shift the North Atlantic Jet northwards and the associated circulation changes in the upper troposphere influence Indian monsoon through the circumglobal teleconnection across central Asia. The present study, thus highlights the important role of North Atlantic Ocean as an important source of inter-annual variability of the Indian summer monsoon

    The Pervasive Impact of Information Technology on Internal Auditing

    The impetus for this supplemental chapter titled The Pervasive Impact of Information Technology on Internal Auditing comes from The Institute of Internal Auditors Research Foundation (IIARF) monograph, Research Opportunities in Internal Auditing (2003), hereafter ROIA. ROIA combines theory and practice in conceptual frameworks to promote an understanding of the contemporary internal auditing environment. The goals of ROIA include stimulating academic research on significant internal auditing topics and serving as a “communication bridge” between academics and practicing professionals. ROIA provided us with internal auditing related subject matter content, including the most promising areas of information technology (IT) application in internal auditing. One significant topic that is only briefly mentioned in ROIA is the impact of IT on the internal audit function.3 IT is revolutionizing the nature and scope of worldwide communications, changing business processes, and erasing the traditional boundaries of the organization — internally between departments and externally with suppliers and customers. The resulting intra-enterprise coordination as well as inter-enterprise integration with external business partners through supply chain management and customer relationship management systems demonstrates the power of IT as both a driver and enabler of management processes and strategies. Indeed, internal auditors must recognize and leverage the powerful capabilities of computers and technology in collecting, generating, and evaluating information for managerial decision making related to strategy, risk management and controls, and, more broadly, for effective organizational governance. At the same time, internal auditors must recognize that IT, in itself, will not increase the function’s effectiveness. Rather internal auditors must first understand the audit objectives and select appropriate IT to achieve those objectives (i.e., the task-technology fit is essential).     Is IT Next for ERM? Information Technology Provides the Vital Infrastructure for Building a Modern Enterprise

    As the waves of change caused by the U.S. Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 subside, the next force likely to sweep over organizations is the need to implement enterprise risk management (ERM). ERM has sparked a paradigm shift by encouraging organizations to build a comprehensive risk strategy into their business operations and spurring internal auditors to move from a primarily control-based approach to a predominantly risk-based approach. One major area of enterprise risk that internal auditors must understand is how information technology (IT) affects their organization within the context of The Committee of Sponsoring Organizations of the Treadway Commission\u27s (COSO\u27s) Enterprise Risk Management—Integrated Framework. IT is intertwined with all eight components of COSO\u27s ERM framework—as both a source of risk and a risk management tool (see ERM Automation on page 47). Internal auditors also can add substantial value to the organization by providing advice on using IT to develop a sound ERM program.     Correlations due to localization in quantum eigenfunctions of disordered microwave cavities

    Non-universal correlations due to localization are observed in statistical properties of experimental eigenfunctions of quantum chaotic and disordered microwave cavities. Varying energy {E} and mean free path {l} enable us to experimentally tune from localized to delocalized states. Large level-to-level Inverse Participation Ratio (IPR I_{2}) fluctuations are observed for the disordered billiards, whose distribution is strongly asymmetric about . The density auto-correlations of eigenfunctions are shown to decay exponentially and the decay lengths are experimentally determined. All the results are quantitatively consistent with calculations based upon nonlinear sigma-models.Comment: 4 pages, LaTex, 5 .jpg figures.     Structure of Quantum Chaotic Wavefunctions: Ergodicity, Localization, and Transport

    We discuss recent developments in the study of quantum wavefunctions and transport in classically ergodic systems. Surprisingly, short-time classical dynamics leaves permanent imprints on long-time and stationary quantum behavior, which are absent from the long-time classical motion. These imprints can lead to quantum behavior on single-wavelength or single-channel scales which are very different from random matrix theory expectations. Robust and quantitative predictions are obtained using semiclassical methods.
